Sunday, September 27th at 7pm, TPT will be premiering a documentary called “Black Brilliance” in support of A Corporation For Public Broadcasting (PBS/tpt) 34 station initiative called "American Graduate - Let’s Make it Happen" and in building up further awareness of the growing ‘American Graduate Day’ that will be held nationwide this Saturday, October 3rd 2015.
Black Brilliance follows a handful of Black youth attending various schools located in the Twin Cities. With Minnesota having the highest educational "achievement (more like belief) gap" in the United States, we are brought in to glimpse these students final weeks of high school. We meet their families, educators, and mentors who have invested in them, and we hear about their plans for the future.
The Minnesota Hip Hop Coalition is honored to have been a part of this project to help advise on some of the deeper areas regarding the influence and inspiration that Hip Hop Culture has given all of our youth across all perceived lines in today’s education system. That inspiration has created a “Remix Generation” who are youth that take the fragments of old and new in order to mix them together for an evolved and self created method aimed at not only improving life for themselves, but for next young people to come. Which is truly the essence and backbone of the American (I Have a) Dream culture.. aka Hip Hop Culture.
On Tuesday, August 25th 2015, the Minneapolis Youth Coordinating Board together with the You(th) Are Here Engagement Team and their Revolutionary Approach to Groundbreaking Empowerment (R.A.G.E.), The Blueprint For Action: Preventing Youth Violence, and The Musicant Group held an event called "Create Yourself! Youth Fair" that provided a free expression outlet for youth and young adults within Minneapolis. The event was held at the beautiful Target Field Amphitheater and was originally scheduled for August 22nd, 2015 but due to rainy weather it was postponed until the following Tuesday; showing the sincere dedication and commitment to providing open space for our youth.
